A publishing phenomenon, selected for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0

Launching a bestselling phenomenon

In 2019, Ovato worked with Penguin Random House Australia to print An American Marriage, a novel by Tayari Jones that tells the story of an African American couple, Roy and Celestial, whose lives are torn apart when he is convicted of a crime he did not commit. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward – with hope and pain – into the future.

The book was a publishing phenomenon. It was selected for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, praised by Barack Obama and won the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction as well as the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work in Fiction.

With the book firmly in the public spotlight, Penguin Random House Australia needed to turn around a reprint as quickly as possible in order to meet public demand, enable publicity around the book and support sales in the Australian market.
